Sabang Underground River, The Longest In The World
One of the things you shouldn't miss out on is the Puerto Princesa Underground River: one of the new seven wonders of nature. The river is 8.2 km long and flows slowly through a cave full of stalactites and stalagmites with the strangest forms.
The Underground River, the longest underground river in the world, is part of the Puerto Princesa National Park, located about 50 kilometers north of the city, in the village of Sabang.
Our advice for travelers who want to see the underground river is to stay overnight in Sabang so as to avoid the crowds and be able to participate in the first exit of 8.30 a.m. and not to have to get up very early in the morning and get a little upset because of the trip and the streets full of curves.
Sabang is a small village that rises on the beach, very wild, large tracts of pristine jungle and lives mainly on tourism. The surrounding rainforest is part of the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park and allows for hiking, high-level birdwatching and visiting the mangrove forest.
Don't miss the sunset from the beach, sipping mango smoothie (we really love it) and then go to eat in one of the restaurants with a very intimate and cozy atmosphere.
It is possible to book the excursion either from home, before leaving, or on site.
We bought it the afternoon before.
Our excursion cost 1300 PHP p / p (including the environmental tax of 150 P).
The tour includes pick up from the guest house, guide, buffet lunch with a drink, entrance to the park, environmental taxes and boat transfer with annexed ride in the underground river.
To preserve the place, more than 1000 people a day cannot access it and it is necessary to get permission to access it.
We took a boat from the Sabang pier, from the boat you can see a splendid panorama: rocky mountains overlooking the sea of an emerald green and bright blue, white beaches and after a while we are here, landed in this paradise.
You will not be unloaded ashore but a few meters from the beach, so you will get wet: put on shorts and flip-flops.
From the beach in 5 minutes’ walk (on a wooden walkway), you reach the entrance of the cave proper.
Crystal clear waters in which we would like to dive immediately, instead the tour of the underground river of Sabang awaits us.
They provided us with helmets, a guide in our language and made us get on these boats.
The river It is over 8 km long, but the excursions cover only 1.5 km (about 40min of navigation).
Along the way the guide, with the help of a torch, indicates to the participants the various points of interest.
In the dark cave there are stalactites and stalagmites of different shapes and many bats live on the wall of the rocks.
The highest point measures 60 meters from the river level, and the widest point reaches 150 meters. The deep silence is broken only by the sound of the oar
Once the tour was finished, the boat took us back to the harbor and having still a few hours available we opted for the mangrove tour.
